Indirect Evaporative Cooling with Sensible Heat Exchanger

POLiHEX, is the next generation cross flow, polymer plate type sensible heat exchanger for indirect evaporative cooling which is an energy-efficient cooling method that utilizes the cooling potential of water evaporation without directly introducing moisture into the air used for cooling. Unlike direct evaporative cooling, where water vapor is added to the air, indirect evaporative cooling maintains the air’s moisture level while still achieving significant temperature reduction.

Principles of Indirect Evaporative Cooling (IEC):

In IEC, two air streams are used-one to remove heat and the other to carry cooled air into the space that needs cooling:

Primary Air Stream (Cooler Side): The air that needs to be cooled flows through fluted channels or surface where a thin film of water is maintained on the other side without any contact. As the water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the air, lowering the temperature of the air. This process does not add moisture to the air directly, but it cools the air through heat exchange.

Secondary Air Stream (Warmer Side):
The cooled primary air is then directed to the space that needs cooling. However, the two air streams do not mix. The cooled air is passed to the environment, while the warmer, evaporated air is exhausted outside. This results in significant cooling without the humidification of the indoor air.

In the process, the air flows through POLiHEX will not have any direct contact with water and enables the air to cool sensibly without any moisture addition.
